Ismail al-Faruqui (1921–1986)

Ismail al-Faruqui was a Palestinian-born Muslim who received high academic honors for his scholarship and for his work on behalf of the cause of Islamic scholarship from McGill and Temple Universities, where he was professor of religion and chair of Islamic studies. On May 27, 1986, he and his wife, Lois Lamya al-Faruqi, herself a renowned expert on Wyncote, Pennsylvania. The crime may have been a robbery attempt gone wrong, or it may have been a deliberate assassination; the murders remain unsolved. But with it, the American Muslims lost tireless and dedicated workers for the cause of education and furthering appreciation of Islamic culture and learning.
